Kindred Matter is founded by Laurel and Rachel Messina, two sisters with backgrounds in the fashion industry. Their shared appreciation for hand crafted, contemporary design and first-hand observation of the waste produced by textile manufacturing inspired them to start Kindred Matter.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, they design original art and home decor pieces for considered interiors.

Our Principles
We value objects that show the mark of human hands, that convey stories of the individuals that made them. This value carries through to the spaces that hold these pieces, bringing a rich and distinctive character unmatched by mass production.
Kindred Matter pieces are crafted from discarded materials collected from the fashion industry and transformed into tactile expressions of creativity. This is a process that takes time, and Kindred Matter produces each piece by hand in their studio and in collaboration with local fiber artisans.
We believe all design should take into account the broader environmental and social impacts and strive to leave the world better than we found it. We hope you’ll find these values reflected in each piece.
Design
Our progressive design approach is a combination of intention and happenstance. The process begins with a sketch to decide on overall size, look, color family, and composition. We then source discarded, high quality material from the fashion and textile sectors.
These found materials play an important role influencing the final product–an inverse to the traditional design process. Although we cannot predict the precise colors, textures, or patterns of materials reclaimed during the sourcing journey, we embrace this chance discovery as part of our creative methodology.
